High Cholesterol Q & A

What is cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a substance that your body produces naturally, and it's also found in some foods. A certain amount of cholesterol is important for proper bodily function, but when you have excess cholesterol it lines your blood vessels, which causes blockages that can lead to serious health consequences like heart attack or stroke.

There are two distinct kinds of cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL) and low density lipoprotein (LDL). HDL cholesterol is often referred to as "good" cholesterol because its job is eliminating the "bad" LDL cholesterol from your blood.

In your cholesterol blood test results, you'll see several numbers, including a total cholesterol number, an HDL number, an LDL number, and a triglycerides number.

What should my cholesterol levels look like?

Your cholesterol levels are broken into several components.

Combined cholesterol

Your combined cholesterol number should be under 200 mg/dL. 200-239 is borderline high, while 240 or up is high cholesterol.

LDL cholesterol

Your LDL cholesterol should be less than 100. A near-optimal level is 100-129, a borderline high level is 130-159, and high LDL is 160-189.

HDL cholesterol

With HDL cholesterol, the rule is "the higher the better". If your HDL level is less than 40, you're at-risk for heart disease. Levels of 40-59 are good and 60 and up are great.

Triglycerides

Triglycerides are usually part of a cholesterol test. If you have high triglycerides, your heart disease risk increases. A healthy triglycerides level is 150 mg/dL. If your triglycerides are 150-199, it's borderline high, and if your level is 200-499 it's high. Very high triglycerides are 500 and up.

Dr. Nally will discuss your cholesterol test results with you and then help you beat high cholesterol using a natural healthy approach.

How can I reverse high cholesterol?

Dr. Nally recommends a cutting-edge nutritional approach to cholesterol management. With the ketogenic diet, you can bring your cholesterol numbers into a healthy range while also losing extra weight and enhancing your overall health.
